Housing is
paramount to human existence as it ranks among the top three needs of man. It
is widely acknowledged that adequate housing is essential for good life. Stable
affordable housing provides an important foundation for the economic and social
well being of individuals, families, and the communities in which they live. In
Nigeria, the story of home-ownership is never cheering, no matter who tells it
and in whatever context. With challenges like high cost of land resulting from
land charges, high interest rate, high
cost of building materials and absence of a strong mortgage finance system makes
the gap between income and shelter cost
in Nigeria very wide thereby eliminating the low-income earners from the
housing market.
A
solution to this problem, however, is the contribution of cooperative societies
towards housing development in Nigeria. A
Cooperative Society is an association of persons who have voluntary formed
together to achieve a common to the capital required and benefit of the
undertaking in which members actively participate
Lashone Links Housing
Co-operative Multipurpose Society limited, an initiative of Lashone Links Group
of companies is a house ownership actualization and investment society using
the power of co-operative and thrift. Duly registered with the Lagos state
Ministry of Agriculture Co-operatives and runs independent of the promoters,
with fully elected executives, Lashone Links Housing Co-operative
Multipurpose Society limited commenced operation after inauguration on May 29th,
2012 at The Lagos Airport Hotel.
The cooperative started with the primary
objective to promote the economic interest of its members, to encourage regular
savings amongst members so that each member may cultivate the habit of making
savings at least once in every month, with a view to building up funds for
future use, and making loans available to members at fair and reasonable rates
of interest for investments in small businesses and properties. Although
not without its challenges, the cooperative grew overtime with over 60 members,
successfully held its Annual General Meeting in Dec., 2013 and has acquired hectares of land in Abuja, Ibeju Lekki, Simawa, Agbara and Ibeshe so as to make housing affordable for its members.
