CO-OPERATIVE
MULTIPURPOSE SOCIETY LIMITED
In Nigeria, the
struggle for home ownership by all classes of people is legendary. Everybody is
desirous of owning one, or in the very least, stay in a decent and cheap
accommodation.
There are many
challenges to home ownership in the country with the problem of land
acquisition a major factor. The problem is better felt in the urban areas where
land is constantly in demand for residential, commercial and industrial
accommodation.
Death of cheap and
long-term finance for housing development is another major obstacle to home
ownership because of absence of a virile mortgage system the draws from pool to
fund housing construction, acquisition and rehabilitation.
However, the idea of
home ownership through co-operative societies is gradually gaining ground in
the country due to the failure of individual efforts and government’s interventions
to make any meaningful impact in housing development.
Cooperative society
simply means when two or more people come together with the aim of improving
their socio-economic well being. The members will set aside a portion on their
income, which they will put into a pool for any of them that is ready to go
into a viable venture or undertake a significant project to borrow from. Or
cooperative society is formed when people join with each other on a democratic
basis to own or control the housing and/or related community facilities in
which they live. Usually they do this by forming a not-for-profit cooperative
corporation. Each month they simply pay an amount that covers their share of
the operating expenses of their cooperative corporation.
Since it is unlikely
that all the members of the society will need money at the members of the
society will need money at the same time, there will always be something to
give to a member in dire need of money for a defined purpose. Usually, the list
of when each member will be entitled to borrow money from the cooperative would
have been drawn out at the commencement of the contribution circle.
